The Advertising Legend behind Ogilvy & Mather had a distinct style; in his copywriting and style.
Ogilvy had a diverse and eclectic background and life before starting his own Advertising agency in 1948, with 2 staff and no clients. He quickly built Ogilvy & Mather into one of the eight largest Advertising networks in the world with 450 offices spread over 169 cities.
He achieved this by ensuring a high diversity and quality of staff and the quality and class of the entire operation.
"Only first class business, and that in a first class way"
Ogilvy established himself as one of the first brand marketing practioners. He believed 'Every advertisement is part of the long-term investment in the personality of the brand"
Ogilvy was responsible for some of the most famous advertising campaigns, The Man in the Hathaway Shirt, Roll's Royce ("At 60 Miles An Hour The Loudest Noise In This New Rolls-Royce Comes From The Electric Clock".) and Commander Whitehead in the Schweppes ads.The Man in the Hathaway Shirt and Schweppes ads ran for 25 & 18 years respectively.
Ogilvy was born in West Horsely, England in 1911. His varied background took him from dropping out of Oxford University, a Chef at Hotel Majestic in Paris, Door-to-Door Salesman for Aga Cookers, Associate Director of George Gallup's Audience Research InStitchu in Princeton, New Jersey. He then worked with the British Security Coordination as a secretary to the British Embassy in Washington. Once the war had ended, Ogilvy became a farmer (among the Amish) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A truly diverse background.
Fortune called his Aga Cooker's Sales Manual 'Probably the best sales manual ever written'. This collective background all worked to create one of the most famous and sought-after marketing minds.
In 1948, Ogilvy founded his advertising agency with Anderson Hewitt, the agency was called Hewitt, Ogilvy, Benson & Mather. His first ad at HOB&M was the 'Guinness Guide to Oysters'.
David Ogilvy's Style
Ogilvy was famous for saying, if you can't market yourself. How can you possibly market anything.
David Ogilvy created a distinctive 'brand' style. He played on his UK heritage to differentiate himself in New York. His style never completely transferred to the 1950's American Sack Suit style.
His suits were cut slim to his well-built figure. His favourite material was tweed. Full tweed suits with a crisp pressed white shirt would be his trademark outfit. He would top it off with his iconic pipe and charismatic wit.
