We've been meaning to write a post on sports jackets for a while. They're something we really love here at InStitchu and we feel they should be worn more. They embrace that whole feeling of English country sides, hunting, polo and fly fishing.
The Sports Jacket 'alternate pants' combo was specifically created for sporting activities, an example being the Tweed Jacket precisely for shooting, as the deep pockets held cartridges, with the pleats allowing ease in movement.
The Sports Jacket was not just a suit Jacket worn with different suit pants, more so a Jacket with the ability to go with pants of any style. Therefore it represented a Luxury, as deemed unnecessary to have by most, but essential by those whom appreciated style.
According to legend, the new sporting look was first worn on the estates of the Duke of Norfolk, hence the term for this particular jacket, the "Norfolk Jacket". It was made of Tweed, with three to four buttons, a belt and pleats for easy movement, commonly worn by the ever-stylish Sherlock Holmes. it was later popularised by the Ivy League students of America but still carries a certain level of style and sophistication (see The Duke of Windsor).
If you're interested in creating your own sports jacket, InStitchu recommends the following fabrics; 120, 121, 128, 129, 130, 150 and 151.
Try exploring some new style options in our design tool such as patch pockets, elbow pads and 1/3 or ¼ inner lining.
